A note about pricing: Here at Proteus, we do
not offer any sort of fixed cost for a certificate, license, or rating.
There are too many variables and we do not want to make promises we
cannot keep. As such, below is the most realistic estimate we can offer
with regards to private pilot training based on our years doing
business. See our training section for more details on why the numbers are the way they are.

Aircraft and Instructor Rates
All aircraft rates are wet. All instructor rates are flight or ground. These are the rates you pay, no fuel surcharges, nothing.
Aircraft N777VP: $120 per hour N2902S: $129 per hour N400JW: $129 per hour

Private Pilot Private pilot is the basic certificate all pilots start with. This is where you'll begin your training.
Our costs: 1) Airplane usage. (60 hours at $129 per hour) = $7740 2) Instruction, ground and flight. (60 hours at $62 per hour) = $3720 3) Books and supplies. = $200 Total: $11,660
Costs outside Proteus: 1) Medical exam. = $100.00 2) Written exam. = $90 3) Oral and practical exam. = $450 Total: $640
Total: $12,300
We assure you it is the most realistic estimate we can offer. While other schools may offer attractive "package" deals with lower total costs, but please be careful as many will budget only the minimum required hours and charge costly hourly rates if you go over the amount of hours they allow for. See our training section for more details.

Introductory Flight This is where the love affair begins. With our introductory flight, you get the real experience of a first flight lesson. You will meet with your instructor for around 30 minutes before your flight to learn how to handle the aircraft safely, along with a few other bits of wisdom. Next you and your instructor will complete a pre-flight inspection to make sure the plane is in top shape to go. After that the real fun starts! You will fly as long as 45 minutes, all on your own (unless the instructor needs to take over)! That's right, just you and the sky. After you get back on terra firma you'll have a short debriefing and a question and answer session with the instructor if you decide this is the thing for you! The experience usually lasts around two hours until you leave our office, hopefully with a taste for more. This is a must for any would-be flight student, as it is in an important step before makeing such a big commitment to flight training. (No passengers please!)

Sight-seeing Flight Also available for those who wish to see the world from above, but not interested in actually flying, this is a tour of the Los Angeles Basin from the air. Your pilot will take you south along the coast, over Long Beach, then east towards Downtown Los Angeles. From there you'll head north over the Hollywood sign and Dodger Stadium, then fly by Century City on your way back to Santa Monica. If there is something you're eager to see in the area, feel free to ask and we'll do our best to fly by it. Two people can join you on this adventure.

Beginner Pilot Phase For the truly ambitious student, this package is the first three flight lessons where you'll learn handling and basic airmanship. Your first flight (1 hour) will be an introduction to basic aircraft handling. Lesson 2 (1 hour) will fine tune the technique and introduce other elements of the flight environment. Lesson 3 (1 and a half hours) will be a flight to Catalina (or another destination) with a rest stop. This flight centers on navigational technique, and shows how enjoyable flying can be to get around!
